Basanti Devi College was established in 1959 by the Government of West Bengal as the city's first government-aided college. The institute offers a wide variety of (Hons. & General) UG programmes in English as well as PG degrees in Political Science. The college also provides a certificate programme in English language training and a diploma programme in export-import management. The University of Calcutta is connected with Basanti Devi College, which is reaccredited by NAAC with a B+ rating. For all UG programmes and Political Science, admission to Basanti Devi College is based on the merit of marks obtained on the qualifying test; however, students choosing to enrol in English must first pass the college's own English Entrance Exam.
